New Graduate Nursing Loan-Forgiveness Program

If you're a nurse ready for the next step in your career or a former nurse waiting for the right opportunity train others, South College is ready to assist.

In the past week, there have been hundreds of news stories, blogs, articles, videos and job postings expressing the need for nurses and the continuing nursing shortage. As more college students move into the profession, a recurrent side effect is the lack of nursing instructors and trainers. The state of Tennessee has responded with a loan program that could put nurses in the classroom teaching others the skills of the career and fulfilling a need that would help not only future nurses but the medical industry at large.

The new Graduate Nursing Loan-Forgiveness Program offers Tennessee residents who are registered nurses the option to become a faculty member or administrator of Tennessee nursing education programs. Although officially called a “loan,” the program is focused on forgiveness of the loan after an obligatory period of full-time employment.

South College is excited about participating in the program and becoming an active part of the training. In order to be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Be a Tennessee resident and a U.S. citizen
  • Have an unencumbered Tennessee nursing license
  • Be enrolled in an eligible master’s degree or a post master’s degree in a nursing educational program at an eligible institution

Those who accept the award must sign a promissory note and, in doing so, are obligated to the equivalent of four years of full-time employment in a Tennessee nursing education program to have the loan forgiven, immediately upon completion of the education program.

Awards are made in equal installments each term throughout the academic year. The award may be renewed three times for a total of four years or for the length of the program of study, whichever is less.

Whether you are a nurse ready for the next step in your career or a former nurse waiting for the right opportunity train others for opportunities in nursing, South College is prepared to assist.
