The Educational Specialist in Teacher Leadership in Schools program is a three-quarter cohort program of study designed to prepare teachers for teacher leadership in schools.
Overview of the Educational Specialist Program in Teacher Leadership in Schools
The Ed. S. Program in Teacher Leadership in Schools is a 42 quarter hour cohort program designed for classroom teachers who seek to develop knowledge and skills in teacher leadership at the school level. The program is designed to be completed in three quarters and requires candidates to take 14 quarter hours each quarter. Students will complete collaborative coursework each week, with additional work completed online in an asynchronous format.
The curriculum extends candidates’ knowledge and skills to the study of effective leadership practices at the school level as they assume teacher leader roles and responsibilities focused on student learning and achievement. The program of study, developed in accordance with current research and standards, incorporates theory and practice as candidates apply knowledge, skills, dispositions, and commitments acquired in coursework into the collaborative practices of their professional learning community as part of their leadership coursework.
A main purpose of the coursework is to extend candidates’ understanding of research into actual practice through the development of a research question, a review of literature, and a research proposal as a vehicle for improving student achievement. Focus on research continues as candidates engage in the study of evidenced-based leadership practices that transform low-performing schools into effective schools and in the study of effective professional development practices aimed at raising student achievement and teacher knowledge and skill. The program of study requires that candidates create professional development presentations as culminating experiences to demonstrate their leadership knowledge and skills at the end of each quarter. The third quarter professional development presentation addresses the research proposal and the personal professional development plan created during the program of study.
