Ed Michaud

Ph.D.
Director of Genetic Sciences

Current Position and Professional Experience:

Dr. Ed Michaud is a Professor and the Director of Genetic Sciences for the School of Physician Assistant Studies at South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dr. Michaud has over 20 years of experience as an educator and research scientist in molecular genetics and genomics. Following the completion of his Ph.D. degree and Postdoctoral Fellowship, Dr. Michaud was a Research Assistant Professor of Molecular Genetics in the College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville from 1995-1996. From 1996-2007, Dr. Michaud held the position of Senior Staff Scientist in the Mammalian Genetics and Genomics Group, Life Sciences Division, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. During this time, Dr. Michaud was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor (1997-2003) and Adjunct Associate Professor (2003-2007) in The University of Tennessee - Oak Ridge National Laboratory Graduate School of Genome Science and Technology. Dr. Michaud’s research focused on using the mouse as a model organism for understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease. He has a broad range of biomedical teaching experience, both in the classroom and the laboratory. Dr. Michaud has 37 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has given over 100 presentations of his work at local, national, and international scientific meetings. He has a significant track record in securing grant funding. In 2007, Dr. Michaud accepted the position of Director of Genetic Sciences for the School of Physician Assistant Studies at South College. He has been with the Physician Assistant program since its inception in 2007. Dr. Michaud has integrated medical genetics/genomics training throughout the curriculum of the Masters of Health Science, Physician Assistant Studies Program at South College.


Professional Education:

Dr. Michaud received his B.S. degree from the University of Central Florida in 1979, his M.S. degree from Texas A&M University in 1984, and his Ph.D. degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1990. He was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow and an Alexander Hollaender Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biology Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1991-1995.


Teaching Responsibilities (Physician Assistant program):

Dr. Michaud is the Course Director for Medical Pathology and Genetics. He is a Lecturer in Health Assessment and Physical Examination; Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine; Pharmacotherapeutics; Women’s Health; Evidence Based Medicine; and Health Care Ethics and Law.


Teaching Responsibilities (Bachelors of Health Science program):

Dr. Michaud is the Course Director for Human Genetics and Genomics.


Committee Memberships:

Dr. Michaud serves on South College’s Faculty Rank Peer Review Committee and Conduct Committee. He is Co-Chair of the Self-Assessment Committee and a Member of the Core Faculty and Staff Committee and the Student Progress Committee for the Physician Assistant Program.
