Dr. Devaney joined the faculty at South College in June 2011. He earned a PhD in Human Services/Criminal Justice from Walden University in 2005 and received his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Tennessee in 1996. He has taught Criminal Justice curriculum at academic institutions in Florida and Nebraska since 1997. Dr. Devaney has also worked in the Criminal Justice field in various positions including adult and juvenile probation, human services/social work, as well as security and education. Juvenile justice and community corrections are his primary areas of expertise.
Dr. Devaney’s research interests include issues in juvenile delinquency, community corrections, cultural factors in crime and delinquency, youth substance abuse in rural communities, counseling and treatment models for incarcerated youth, and crime theory.
Dr. Devaney’s doctoral dissertation was titled “Probation Officers’ Orientations Toward Control and Assistance Functions of Community Supervision.” His MSCJ research was titled “A Study of Sentencing Differences for Juvenile Offenders Based on Gender.”
He is the proud father of five and is a native of East Tennessee.
